Many people believe that a civil wedding is a dull and casual affair that consists of a fast exchange of vows in an impersonal chamber of an equally impersonal public facility. Things are a little different in our situation, since the town hall of Mykonos is a lovely, historic structure built in 1785 to serve as the house of Ivan Voinovich, a Russian Count. The town hall, which overlooks Hora’s main street, houses rare and valuable historical literature and manuscripts.
The modest Orthodox Church of St. Nicolas, the Saint of Sailors, is located just across from its entrance and features the traditional blue colored dome of Cycladic architecture.
Civil marriages are held there twice a week, and the wedding certificate is recognized worldwide. There are a plethora of options for how to commemorate this momentous day, ranging from a delectable lunch in one of the port tavernas to an exquisite buffet on board a mega yacht cruising towards Delos Island for the Aegean’s most famous sunset.
